Last week, I joined Chancellor Tim White and all 22 CSU presidents in signing a statement expressing deep concern about the Executive Order on immigration. Cal State East Bay has approximately 25 students and faculty directly affected by the ban and we are taking steps to ensure they are receiving any assistance we can provide. This remains a fluid situation and I assure you that we are monitoring it very closely and will provide updates when possible.
During these changing times, I encourage faculty and staff to take the extra step and reach out to each other and in particular, to our students. If you come across someone who could benefit from more direction or guidance, please be proactive. Cal State East Bay has many different services available to support students and I want to highlight just a few.
If students have concerns about their visa status or immigration questions, please refer them to the , located in room #102 of the SF building. Advisors can help international students with understanding their rights and responsibilities and direct them to the appropriate resources.
For students with food insecurity, has launched a food share program at both the Hayward and Concord campus. If you are hosting an event and have remaining food, Project HOPE can alert students by text with an invitation to stop by and have something to eat. Send an email to hope@csueastbay.edu with the following details:
Food Type: e.g., sandwiches, salads, hot or cold
Location: Building/Classroom #
Campus: Hayward or Concord
Availability: How long food will be available for pick up
Food pantries are now available at both the Hayward and Concord Campuses. Non-perishable items can be dropped off directly at either pantry, located inside the Student Health and Counseling Services on the Hayward campus and in the lobby of the Academic Services building at Concord. Nearly one thousand food items have been distributed to over 200 students and I am proud that our campus has embraced this initiative in such a strong way, in such a short amount of time.
Another important initiative of Project HOPE assists our homeless student population. HOPE provides information on shelters, emergency housing options and sites for shared housing options. A few community members and hotels have reached out to provide rooms for students and work continues to identify possible rentals. Share leads on housing or rental options by emailing hope@csueastbay.edu.
In addition to concerns about food or housing insecurity, students may have questions about what to do in case of a financial emergency. are available to any student currently enrolled in a state-supported program. Funds are available for short-term emergencies including groceries, book purchases, car repairs and rent. Please refer students to the Enrollment Information Center (EIC) on the first floor of the SA building. At Concord, the E-Loan application form is in the lobby of the Academic Services building.
Lastly, there are different types of assistance on the Hayward and Concord campus for those who may seek counseling. Whether students are interested in couples or individual counseling, all appointments are confidential. Each of us should be ready to reach out if we observe a student who might benefit from these services. More information about or identify when students are distress can be found .
