Semester Conversion Subcommittee Hosting Faculty Workshops

  • March 29, 2017

The Faculty Development Subcommittee of Semester Conversion will be holding a series of workshops over the next month to help faculty as they navigate the changes brought on by semester conversion, scheduled for completion in fall 2018.

The workshops will be a chance for faculty to brainstorm not just about the logistics of converting from quarters to semesters, but also about the benefits of being with students for several more weeks each semester.

“We want to talk about the opportunities this brings to the classroom and what it means to change the flow of a class,” Mary D'Alleva, chair of the subcommittee, said. “It’s also part of an ongoing dialogue we’re hoping to have with faculty.”

Teach Smarter Not Harder with Rubrics, Wednesday, April 12,12:00-1 p.m., VBT 411:

A rubric is a roadmap for improving student success. Cal State East Bay has a rubrics library, representing many disciplines, where faculty can find or re-purpose rubrics to suit the needs of their courses. De-mystify rubrics by learning how they help make grading faster and more effective, where to find existing examples of rubrics, and what strategies can help for quick and useful rubric design. Attendees are encouraged to bring an assignment to work on. Workshop facilitators: Jeff Newcomb, marketing and entrepreneurship; Bernie Salvador, senior instructional designer and Julie Stein, educational effectiveness.

How to Handle Major Advising/Mentoring, April 28, 12:00-2 p.m., Biella Room:

Advising for students about their majors is an opportunity to support and guide them to efficiently and effectively reaching the finish line of graduation and transitioning to the next stage of their journey. Ideally, advisors can support students’ progress, build community within their discipline and help students see their futures more clearly. However, often students only seek out advising for their major at the very end of their degree, or if there is trouble. Attendees will hear about different approaches to advising students about their majors and have a chance to share their experiences. Organizers hope the brainstorming session will lead to common ideas for support, practices and  information that will be useful across departments and colleges. Presenters: Julie Glass, mathematics; Carl Stempel, sociology; Sarah Nielsen, English; and David Fencsik, psychology.

Teach Smarter Not Harder, Thursday, May 4, 12:00-1:15 p.m., SF 329:

The transition to semesters offers the opportunity to increase student’s active engagement in classes. This workshop will address factors such as: time, pace, units and how these impact the student and faculty experience as well as strategies for student learning. It will also include a presentation about an open Blackboard resource created by and for East Bay faculty that includes examples of assignments and activities. Presenters: Faculty Development Subcommittee for Semester Conversion.
