A Message from President Morishita: Inside East Bay, November 2018

- November 20, 2018
Thanksgiving is a time to reflect on gratitude and acknowledge both the challenges and accomplishments the year has brought. Our hearts go out to all those impacted by the fires in northern and southern California. For those wishing to provide monetary assistance to the victims of the Camp Fire, has set up a fund to provide relief. In Southern California, is assisting victims of the Hill and Woolsey fires.
I remain tremendously grateful to our university community for the active, creative and intellectual space we have created for our students to thrive. One such student is a recent graduate,Tsephel Dolma. Tsephel Dolma (who uses both names per the Tibetan tradition) has a terrific story of perseverance in her family. Her grandfather fled with his family from their native Tibet in 1959. As refugees, they settled in Mysore in southern India, growing maize. He and his wife raised their children and grandchildren. From an early age, her grandfather told her that he wanted her to have a desk job and not the backbreaking work of a farm.
I am happy to report that . After graduating in June from Cal State East Bay, she landed a job in the San Jose office of the prestigious accounting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers. Tsephel Dolma and the students who share similar stories — as well as the faculty and staff who helped them along their way — make me proud of who we are as a university and as pioneers.
Wishing each of you a very happy Thanksgiving.
