A Message from President Morishita: Inside East Bay, February 2020

- February 26, 2020
Spring semester is well underway and Cal State East Bay students, faculty and staff are hard at work in their classrooms, on campus and in the community.
Earlier this month we celebrated homecoming with activities, including an office and door decorating contest, our annual parade and a campus service day. Thank you to everyone who participated — your service was appreciated, and your joy infectious. I also had a great time cheering on our women’s and men’s basketball teams at the Homecoming game. Our Pioneers played valiantly and should be proud of their performance.
Recently, I had the privilege of speaking at a local congregation, Glad Tidings Church in Hayward, for the 14th annual California State University’s Super Sunday event. During Super Sunday, CSU leaders share empowering messages to churches and communities throughout California about college opportunity and the importance of preparing for college. Visiting Bishop Macklin and Lady Vanessa at Glad Tidings was an uplifting and positive occasion, and during the service, he delivered an important message to his congregation about pursuing higher education. Participating in Super Sunday is always a high point of the year and I am grateful to the churches who welcome representatives from Cal State East Bay every year.
Next month, the university will host around 600 middle and high school students along with their teachers for the annual MESA Day preliminary competition. The program celebrates its 50th anniversary this year and the Cal State East Bay event will be the university’s largest MESA Day to date. In between events, students and their families will have a chance to explore the campus, learn more about our various degree programs and participate in science-related activities.
Thanks to all of you who elevate the message about attending college throughout the entire year. I am proof that just one encouraging conversation can make a difference, so I appreciate each of you for talking with our future students.
And, do not forget to vote next Tuesday, March 3rd.
Leroy M. Morishita
President
