Measles
The best way to prevent measles and its spread is to get vaccinated.
How do I know if I have measles?
Persons with measles will have:
- A high fever;
- Red, watery eyes;
- Runny nose;
- Coughing;
- Sneezing; and
- A rash that starts days after the above symptoms and spreads all over the body.
What do I do if I think I have measles?
If you have symptoms and may have been exposed, please remain isolated at home or in your dorm room and call Student Health & Counseling Services at (510) 885-3735 before going to the health center to help decrease the spread of infection on campus.
Who needs the measles vaccine?
- If you have not received the measles vaccination, Student Health & Counseling Services has the vaccination available at the Student Health Center for $75.55.
- If you have never been vaccinated and have been exposed to measles, be sure to get the vaccine within 3 days of your exposure to maximize your immune response.
- Visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to see if you should not get the measles vaccine:
I do not know if I have had the measles vaccine
What if I am not sure if I have had the measles vaccine?
- Cal State East Bay students are required to show proof of having the MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine in order to register unless you signed a waiver.
- The 1st dose of MMR is usually given at 1 - 1.5 years of age and the 2nd dose of MMR is usually given at 4 - 5 years of age.
- Check with your parents, guardians, and/or pediatrician to see if you have had the vaccine.
Should I get another measles vaccine just to be safe?
This is not recommended unless you have:
- Never been vaccinated;
- Not sure if you have had a 2nd immunization; or
- A blood test shows that you are not immune to measles.
You can get your blood tested at Student Health & Counseling Services to find out your immunity to measles. (Cost $15.00)
