Health Sciences

Students majoring in health sciences are driven to improve the health of their communities. Students interested in this major generally prepare for careers in health, health policy, law, health education, program planning and evaluation, community health, behavioral health, occupational safety, and more.

The Department of Public Health focuses on understanding human health from a population perspective, emphasizing health equity, social justice, and the health effects of dynamic physical, social, and political environments. It asks students to think critically, explore health from various perspectives, and understand the role that culture has in constructing health. The department also emphasizes problem-based learning, which is core to its approach. The department aims to help students develop critical thinking, effective teamwork, and strong problem-solving skills.

An undergraduate degree in general health sciences gives students a core knowledge foundation in healthcare delivery disciplines. Many students who want to pursue further training as a clinician (e.g., doctor, nurse, physical therapist) may choose this pathway.

BIOL 230 - Introduction to Clinical Microbiology

PH 250 - Health Disparities and Health Equity

Study the history, development, and current state of health disparities. Discuss the concept of disparity in a public health context and contributing factors. Covers theoretical frameworks and strategies to address health disparities.

PH 315 - Public Health

A critical examination of the major public health challenges facing our society. Delves into how the health of a population is shaped by environmental, cultural, social and economic factors, and by medical care.

PH 330 - Epidemiology

Study the meaning, scope, and applications of epidemiology to public health practice and the use of vital statistics and research data in the scientific appraisal of community health challenges.

PH 355 - Bioethics

Discusses ethical issues that arise in the health sciences, including clinical ethics, ethical issues in new technologies, public health ethics, and distributive justice. The course focuses on sound reasoning through discursive writing.

PH 360 - Health Law

Studies current health legislation, regulations, and standards. Covers the historical development of health programs, policies and procedures and their current legal status. Discussion of key court cases which have shaped health law in the US.
