CSUEB alumnus appointed president-elect of non-profit organization

Cal State Easy Bay alumni Ravi Mistry, MBA (’02), has been appointed president-elect of a non-profit organization in Silicon Valley, Enterprising Pharmaceutical Professionals from the Indian Sub-Continent (EPPIC) Global. Mistry will be serving a two-year term as president in 2014 and 2015.

CSUEB professor Rose Wong leads research to help Chinese-American community

Rose Wong, Cal State East Bay assistant professor of social work, led a team of professionals, community members and researchers that has released innovative culture-based Chinese and English language materials designed specifically for educating Chinese immigrants about depression. The materials, intended for use in health clinics, schools, social services, and community organizations, address a need for culturally tailored approaches to preventing and treating mental illness.

Pioneer baseball prospect camp set for Jan. 12

Cal State East Bay's head baseball coach has announced that the program will hold its 2014 Prospect Camp on Sunday, January 12 at the Pioneer Baseball Field. The camp is for prospective student-athletes ages 14-21 and costs $100 per player to attend.
The camp goes from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will consist of both offensive and defensive drills, followed by an intrasquad with pitchers throwing live to hitters.

American Language Program91鶹app weekly ‘Special Hour’ draws crowds and promotes cultural awareness

Each week this quarter, students gather together at CSUEB’s American Language Program (ALP) to learn about a particular country’s culture through the ALP Special Hour program. The event, which runs through Nov. 20, takes place from 2 to 3 p.m. on Wednesdays. So far this quarter, ALP students have already showcased China, South Korea and Saudi Arabia. Presentations on Japan and Mexico are scheduled for the upcoming weeks, and the program will end with a traditional American Thanksgiving service.

On Friday, November 1, Cal State East Bay’s Concord Campus will host “Narrowing the Gap,” a conference presented by the Contra Costa County Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. The conference, which is scheduled from 9am to 2pm, is designed to expose local high school students to the advantages of obtaining a college education.
Nearly 400 students representing various high schools throughout Contra Costa County are expected to attend. Participants will rotate through a variety of sessions, meeting education and business professionals while familiarizing themselves with the college application process, sources of financial aid,and potential majors. Students will also receive university-donated backpacks packed with information about Cal State East Bay, with an emphasis on programs at the Concord Campus.
The Contra Costa County Hispanic Chamber of Commerce supports the community through its activities and programs in business development, education and advocacy.The November 1st event marks the third time the Chamber has held its educational conference at the Concord Campus. CSU East Bay staff and students have volunteered to assist with the event.

CSUEB Concord Campus celebrates al Fresco

Over 250 students attended the Concord Campus Al Fresco event on the afternoon and evening of October 9. The event has been held every year as a way to strengthen the campus community, and to promote various services to the student population. Because most Concord students belong to cohorts with set day or night class schedules, the campus hosted separate day and evening events. The former was primarily attended by Nursing, Pre-Nursing, and Health Sciences students, the latter by students enrolled in other majors.

CSUEB women's swimming score season opening victory

Cal State East Bay won all 14 events en route to a 181-65 road win over Mills College at their season opener. Freshman won three events and paced a cast of eight different Pioneers to notch an individual event win.
Hauanio was victorious in the 50-yard freestyle, 200-yard freestyle, and 200-yard backstroke. She was one of three multiple event winners including and . Freshman notched her first official win as a collegiate swimmer in the 1,000 free. Her time of 10:41.90 is within 12 seconds of the program record.
Cal State East Bay (1-0) will return to the Trefethen Aquatic Center in eight days to take part in the Bay Area Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 19, at 10 a.m.

CSUEB alumnus named National Book Award finalist for the second time

CSUEB alumnus and graphic novelist Gene Luen Yang has once again been listed as a finalist for the National Book Award. Yang, who graduated from CSUEB’s program in 2003, made the list for Young People’s Literature for his new two-volume graphic novel, “Boxers & Saints.” Yang also was a finalist in 2006 for his work “American Born Chinese.”

University forum on new Warren Hall replacement building, Oct. 8

Construction of the new Warren Hall Replacement Building is expected to begin in October, 2013. The new building will be located at the previous Early Childhood Center, adjacent to the Student Services Administration (SA) building. Pioneer women's softball players visit, cheer up young shooting victim

Kudos to members of the Cal State East Bay women's softball team for brightening the day on Tuesday morning (Sept. 24) for a child who had been shot as she slept in her bed inside her family's Hayward home on Sept. 19. They visited her at her hospital room in Oakland. She is reportdly recovering as she is able to eat and now walk on her own, according to Hayward Police Sgt. Mark Ormsby.

The Friends of Hayward Public Library will have 649 textbooks to sell at their upcoming fundraiser thanks to Cal State East Bay Professor Michael Lee and students in Lee’s spring Environmental Studies Senior Seminar class who led the collection. This initiative was part of campus sustainability efforts to reduce materials going to the landfill, support beneficial programs in our local community, and creatively reuse unwanted items taking up space in offices and laboratories.

CSUEB swimming sets 16 school records during 2012-13 season

It would not be an exaggeration to say that 2012-13 was the best year in the history of Pioneer swimming. In its third year under head coach — and just its fourth since joining NCAA Division II — Cal State East Bay set 16 school records and sent four student-athletes to a national championship.
The Pioneers won eight of their meets during the season, and they also finished as the top Division II school at the UNLV Invitational in Las Vegas. They had high expectations heading into the Pacific Collegiate Swim Conference (PCSC) Championships in February, but few could have predicted the performance they would turn in. Over the course of four days at the Splash! Aquatic Center in La Mirada, Calif., East Bay shattered nearly every record on the books. They took second place overall, the best finish in program history, while nine swimmers earned All-Conference honors thanks to top-8 finishes in individual events.

Cal State East Bay alumnus Paul Rolleri ’85, criminal justice administration, has been named the interim chief of police for the City of Alameda. Rolleri has been with the Alameda Police Department since 1992 and primarily patrolled the west-end of Alameda when he was an officer. He rose through the ranks, working as a Field Training Officer and in the Investigations Division. He was promoted to sergeant in 2002, to lieutenant in 2009 and to captain in 2011. Rolleri assumed the top job on June 1, 2013.

Japanese students visit CSUEB as part of high school exchange program

Cal State East Bay welcomed five Japanese students to campus on March 20 to 22 as part of a two-week exchange program between Hayward High School and Sado High School.
